The Social Science faculty is focused on providing all students with engaging and meaningful experiences to develop in them a passion for their learning in any one or more of the variety of subjects offered. Students are encouraged to take risks in their learning.

Students in Social Science subjects are able to excel in all they attempt.
Students will participate in a range of field study (excursions) activities and within school events to assist them develop their understanding of the courses being covered. Some of these include
- Year 10 Geography – Wetlands study at Sydney Olympic Park
- Participation in the Australian Securities Exchange Sharemarket Game
Other activities will be undertaken as they are able to be arranged with those providing the experience for the students.
Faculty Aims/Objectives:
The Social Science faculty aims to provide all students at MGHS with:
- Quality learning opportunities
- A curriculum which allows them to select learning paths which meets their interests, abilities and aspirations
- Appropriate yet challenging learning experiences
- A positive learning environment
- The opportunity to excel in their studies and to assisting them to develop into confident and competent young women who can make positive contributions to the school and wider community
- The skills necessary to be successful in the 21stcentury
Faculty Structure:
Students follow a range of mandatory subjects in Years 7- 10, studying Geography in either Semester 1 or 2 each year. In Years 9 and 10, students also have the opportunity to study one or more of the following elective courses:–
- Commerce: A very popular elective subject in NSW for the ROSA
- Elective Geography.
In the Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12) curriculum, students have the opportunity of studying the following 2 unit courses.
- Business Services (VET)- TAFE certificate II + HSC
- Business Studies
- Economics
- Geography
- Legal Studies
- Retail Services (VET) - TAFE certificate II + HSC
Student Requirements:
In each of the Years 7-10 courses, there are similar course requirements:
- An exercise or notebook of approx. 100 pages (slightly larger for year 10 Mandatory Geography & History)
- A device in accordance with the MGHS BYOD policy
- Pens and pencils; standard stationary items
- Their school diary
- Internet access (either at home or using facilities in the school/public library)
Homework and Assessment:
Students are regularly set homework to consolidate their learning and extend their understanding of the material being covered in class. This can include:
- Completing the exercises or activities from the lesson on that day,
- Researching material for future lessons
- Completing assignments and assessment activities
- Watching a particular television program or segment
- Engaging in learning new content to prepare for learning opportunities in class
All students will undertake a range of common assessment activities for their courses. These are designed to supplement classroom learning and develop student understanding of the concepts being covered. They are also used to assist students develop their passion for the subject as they allow students to demonstrate their individuality in the method they choose to research and present these tasks.
